How is the World Shipping Council Promoting Safety in the Shipping Industry?

The World Shipping Council (WSC) has been actively working on several safety initiatives to enhance the safety of dangerous goods transport. Here are some key points:

  1. Cargo Safety Program: The WSC is developing a shared industry process for cargo screening and inspections to strengthen cargo safety standards. This program aims to protect the lives of people working in the supply chain, the environment, and the integrity of the global supply network. The program will rely on a digital solution provided by the National Cargo Bureau (NCB), which will screen booking information against a comprehensive keyword library and risk algorithm.

  2. Standardisation and Unified Approach: The WSC emphasizes the importance of standardisation and a unified approach to cargo screening and inspection. This includes a feedback loop for inspection results to ensure that safety procedures are consistent and comprehensive.

  3. Collaboration with NCB: The WSC has selected the National Cargo Bureau (NCB) as the independent provider for the Cargo Safety Program digital platform. NCB's software.

  4. Addressing Mis-Declared Goods: Despite mandatory international and national regulations, dangerous goods continue to be mis-declared or not declared, leading to an increase in ship fires. The Cargo Safety Program aims to identify and correct dangerous conditions before containers with dangerous cargoes are introduced into the supply chain.

These initiatives are part of the WSC's commitment to making workplaces safer for ship crews, transport workers, and communities, as well as enhancing operational efficiency for shippers.
